William Douglas
« on: Sunday 17 February 19 20:03 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my gg-grandfather, William Douglas.

The 1841 census gives his age as 30 and occupation as Shoemaker, in Kirriemuir. It also says that he was born in England, which was surprising. Any help in pinpointing when and where, would be much appreciated.

He married Ann(e) Thomson in Kirriemuir, in 1832. They had 8 children:
David, Charlotte, Jean, William, Mary Ann, John, Elizabeth, Margaret. Ann(e) was the daughter of the baker David Thomson and his wife Jean Paterson.

In the 1851 Census Ann(e) was a widow, so William must have died between the birth of Margaret in 1847 and 1851. There is a burial record for a William Douglas in Dundee in 1849, but I suspect a burial in Kirriemuir was more likely.

Thanks.

Gordon

Thanks for these suggestions Colin. They are new to me and certainly worth bearing in mind.

There is another Kirriemuir baptism:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYJX-LZX

His name was William - born to the unmarried Margaret Douglas of Airlie. I think she would have been in service to the Ogilvy Family. She married 2 years later. My guess is that father (probably a member of the Ogilvy Family) and son were sent to England.

I have also found an 1807 baptism in the Scottish Presbyterian Church in Monkwearmouth. The father was William Douglas (a shoemaker) and mother Mary Walker. Their 2nd child was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the 3rd back in Durham. By the 1841 Census, William had left home.

So I now have four possibilities.

Thanks,

Trevor
