Were deaths at sea registered?

A passenger list for the Argyle to Port Phillip in 1841 says that 5 female adults died during the voyage but doesn't record their names. If their deaths were registered after landing, I might be able to identify them.

1841 ... Victoria was still part of New South Wales ...  Civil registration of BDM commenced in NSW in March 1856.

Perhaps you need to seek out the Surgeon's report or the Ship's log to see if either has recorded the names of those passengers, likely cause of death and date too.

Ummm.... this article only mentions two deaths, infants ...    but no surnames ...

There were two arrivals for vessels named ARGYLE in 1841.  One in March and the second in April. Which voyage are you interested in?

The Marine Index for Victoria for events at sea on board international and coastal ships bound for port In Victoria, has a date range of 1853 to 1920.

I would suggest the entries in ship's log may be the only record.

Hi,

Deaths at sea had to be reported in the victims country of origin by the ship's captain. On his next port of call in the country they were born in.
I know this because my 3x get grandmother died at sea on the Alfred in 1841 just a few days before the ship arrived in Sydney. Since I received her details I have been told that these Deaths at Sea are now available on familysearch.com, and I think Ancestry and findmypast.com also has them now.

JM and cando,Thanks for the feedback. It was the second Argyle I'm interested in. My ancestor was the surgeon and was reprimanded for downplaying the 45 deaths on board in his report. Unfortunately no crossings out on the passenger lists (there are two versions). No log seems to have survived either.

Thanks Geoff for the info about where the burials were reported. Useful information to have. I'm trying to verify a family story that my gg grandmother's aunt died on the voyage. Only problem is, I don't have her name, only that she was Irish, from Co Tyrone, or perhaps Donegal. I'll try searching using the names of the female passengers but I suspect the Irish records don't exist for this period.

NSW archives should also have digitised the April 1841  passenger   list.

JM I do have copies of the passenger list, also one of the bounty list which is a little different. The problem is I don't know the name of the aunt! Her nieces were Margaret and Martha Nelson from Co Tyrone, daughter of Robert and Mary Nelson.

These family stories will be the death of me :-)

Where can I access the Log of Logs? I have a distant memory of consulting it in the National Library in Canberra ...
