Rock 1851 census
« on: Monday 18 February 19 18:38 GMT (UK) »
In the 1851 census living at 29 Rock, there is a Catherine Ellis (nee Onions) widow of my great uncle John. Now living there are my GFx5 son John and his wife Harriet nee Corbett and their family, they married in1839, so I presume his father Thomas (my gf X5) had died by then. Have I got this right that Hohn and Harriet went to live with his aunt? The other thing is Catherine's age is either 90 or 70 can't make it out. There is a Catherine Onions born 1766 but also one in 1780?

Catherine's age is 90, looking at the image. John is down as her son, Harriot as daughter in law and their children are down as her grandchildren. There is a nephew living there too, Noah Corbett aged 24 born Wellington.

Thanks John can't possibly be her son tho it must be a misprint, there is a death record of Catherine in 1851 if someone can check that I,d be grateful and it might shed a light on her birth, her husband John was born in 1764 I think so it's possible she was born around 1761\2

29 is the schedule number, not the house number  :)

1841 census has Catherine as age 78.

You can check ages at death on the GRO index   https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp
I would have looked for you but not sure which one you are referring to.

Thanks Rosie, so Catherine would be in her late 80s or 90 in 1851 indeed a ripe old age! See if I can find a birth date

If John and Harriet can be found in the 1861 census I,m sure it would be man and wife. What exactly is schedule compared to actual house number before I go knocking on doors! :)

I think Harriet died in 1853 - burial at Ketley Red Lake March 10.Abode The Rock.Age 35.

In 1861 he seems to have remarried.Wife called Sarah.

Possible marriage in Shifnal John Ellis and Sarah Ferriday June 13. His father named as Thomas Ellis.

1861 census has two children Rebecca and Thomas age 1 - groindex suggests mmn is Ferriday.Think they were twins (fact that they were born in Oct - Dec 1859 may explain why marriage was in Shifnal!).

There probably would not have been house numbers in those days.  The schedule number is only for the enumerators use.
