Sometimes you actually get both parents mentioned in the baptism register.

I have one where there were three children born to a couple, with names of both parents written in, before their marriage a month after the baptism of number 3. I have yet to locate a first marriage for the chap.

Earlier registers sometimes say something along the lines of "reputed son of", but this becomes rare when preprinted registers arrive.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
