Catherine O'Keefe
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 06:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for a Catherine O'Keefe.  Limited information I have indicates she was born c 1828 in Clare, Ireland.  Was RC and could read but not write. No parent or sibling info.
Departed Southampton on the Mooltan for Australia in 1854 as a general servant as part of the "Immigrants under the Indenture Scheme".  She went on to marry in Australia and had about 14 children with John Wesley.

Appreciate any pointers or help in how to find a needle in a haystack.

Hi,
Which port did Catherine arrive at?
She would have left from Cork, the ship records state the first port of departure, they call at different ports before the long journey, they even change Captains.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Newspaper Shipping Intelligence for 1854:
Among the vessels taken up for immigrants are the J Cornel from Liverpool to Geelong,
the Mooltan, London to Hobart Town.

Could find no reference to other ports in papers but on the actual passenger list, covering many of the ships bringing immigrants there are handwritten notes beside some of the names saying Sydney or Melbourne but Catherine came to Hobart arriving 30/10/1854.
This is confirmed from another source where she went into service in Hobart on 8/12/1854.

Hope this helps somewhat

Regards
