Martha Knight Brighton Workhouse and Cuckfield Union Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 13:39 GMT (UK) »
I live in Australia and I am researching Martha Knight born Stanmer in 1828 who had a son William on 24 September 1864 in Brighton Workhouse and a daughter Edith who was born on 5 August 1869. In the 1871 Census Martha was recorded at Cuckfield with two more sons Henry aged 16 years and Arthur aged 14 years.  Martha died of Typhoid in 1873 at Cuckfield aged 46 years.  Can anyone tell me if Workhouse records of inmates still exist for the years between 1864 up to 1885 as Edith was an inmate at Rothingdean in the 1881 Census.
If the records no longer exist I would like to know about the Workhouses if anyone has any information and also about any of the people above.

Many thanks

Lyn Connell

Hello Rosie99,

Thank you so much for further information regarding Martha Knight and her children.  From records I have searched Martha never married and her children had no father named on their baptism records which makes searching somewhat difficult. Martha also had a daughter Louisa who was born Brixton 1860 but I have been unable to find a birth or baptism record for her but I did find her marriage certificate in 1900 to George Hammond. I believe Martha was employed by Nichols family which is in the 1851 Census Nichols were merchants and the second son was named Richard.  Baptism records for Henry and Arthur have Nichols written as their middle names. My paternal Great grandfather was Arthur Knight born 1857 Brixton and on his marriage certificate his father is written as Richard Nichols Knight Merchant.  Searches for records of this man have proved fruitless. I feel I am correct in thinking Martha was my 2nd Great Grandmother but proving it seems improbable.

I think you have answered your own question there.  Richard Nichols the second son of the family Martha worked for - depending on his age of course - was the father of Arthur.  When he married he simply added the surname Knight to match his own as a lot of illegitimate children did.

I would check how old this Richard would have been when Arthur was conceived.
