Indonesia POW 1942
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am trying to discover which POW camp in Indonesia my GGG uncle was held in, but I can't understand the symbol on the document I have found, because it is in Japanese.

Can anybody please help?

Thanks,

Adicol

I don't pretend to understand Japanese, but his Commonwealth War Graves entry shows he was  buried in Macassar (Makassar) cemetery (Celebes) having been first buried in Raha cemetery.   This camp was in the Java Camp Group which may well be the JA.

Whether this means he was there all the time perhaps the Japanese script will tell.

This link deals almost exclusively with the US POWs but may be of interest.

Thanks so much for the info and for the link; I had an idea it might be a Java camp. I'm hoping if I can have the writing deciphered it will reveal which one.

There's a photo of him in the Sunderland Daily Echo of 1 December 1945, page 3, "Roll of Honour".

Forgot the link to Makassar camp, the link I gave mentions Raha  As many as 174 POWs died in Raha and during the transports to Makassar.

Click also on the camp list in blue to see the listings.

That newspaper photo is available online but you will need access to FindMyPast or the British Newspaper Archive.
