The POW information is in his CWGC entry https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/4007501/hutchinson,-surtees/   scroll down to the Concentration tab.  The cemetery details information is worth a look too.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

That newspaper photo is available online but you will need access to FindMyPast or the British Newspaper Archive.

Hi,

If you google Dutch East Indies POW camps WWII you should find some firsthand accounts.   You mention your person of interest is your GGG uncle, and I presume you mean your Great, Great, Great Uncle. I am old enough to have immediate family who were POWs during that same war, and my Uncle is still living.

There were POW camps set up by the Japanese throughout the Dutch East Indies colonies  at various locations in Java, Borneo, Celebes,  Sumatra, and Timor.

Here's one website with info about the East Indies POW camps ... You need to be aware that there will be confronting, graphic details in many of the first hand accounts that you may find at various online websites.  https://www.indischekamparchieven.nl/en/general-information/about-de-camps/daily-life-in-the-camps

I’m interested to know where his Christian name ‘Surtees’ comes from?!  Is it from the family name Of ‘Surtees’ of Durham?!

Hi Bitzar,

Thank you for the reply and the link. I have no idea where his name came from - there doesn't seem to be any more members of his family with the same name, but I have only just begun to trace his lineage so I will let you know what I discover.

He was from Sunderland I believe, he was certainly there in 1939.

He died at "Moena off Celebes Island" according to his Probate Calendar entry. That ties in with Raha camp
