I have looked at the marriage of James Taylor and Susanna Moss but do not think this is my James as there is a James Taylor and Susanna living in Parish of St John the Baptist in 1841 and 1851 with James being an Alderman

The transcribed Licence on the Forest of Dean records for the marriage of James TAYLOR to Susannah MOSS

Gives, James TAYLOR age as 23 and occupation: ROPEMAKER

Susannah MOSS is aged 21

On the census returns, James 'occupation is: Brush Maker

Thanks for that Capetown. Could be my James and Susannah in 1841 James is shown as aged 60 and Susannah as 70 I know that ages are sometimes wrong it could be Susannah was said to be of full age which was recorded as 21. James is shown as 75 when he died in 1754 so ties in with him being 23 in 1804 Susannah was shown as 75 at her death in 1844 which ties in with her being shown as 70 in 1841 I will have to try and get to Gloucester archives and see if I kind find baptisms for James and Susannah

It might be worth looking at the original Licence for James TAYLOR, in case Ropemaker - reads Brushmaker.

This website is on a previous link regarding Brushmakers

http://www.brushmakers.com/index.html

Under the heading:

William KIDDIER's list of Brushmaker, 1790-1890

Does list a TAYLOR, James

---

1830 Pigots Directory of Bristol lists:

Samuel TAYLOR, Brush, Sieve & Mop Maker, 7 Lower Arcade Bristol.

---

? there is as Jane TAYLOR - witness at the marriage of James TAYLOR to Susanna

?  Sophia TAYLOR, christened 25 September 1806, Bedminster, Bristol, parents: Samuel & Jane  (a number of children, (born earlier etc) of this Couple.

---

Google Books:  Matthews Annual Bristol Directory

S TAYLER & Son, Brush, Bellows, Pattern & Sieve Maker, 21 Broadmead

Thank you Capetown. Have checked image of licence definitely Ropemaker. when James was an Alderman there was a ropemaker among the Alderman. I will  contact the Archives and see if they have any information on the James who was an Alderman. There is another marriage at Henfield which is only just outside Gloucester of a James Taylor to a Susannah Gabel 25.12.1805 which could be a possibility

Assume you mean Hempstead

The banns say -

James TAYLOR of the Parish of Littleworth and Susannah GABB - married by banns - 25 December 1805 - witnesses: Joshua AVERY and Sophia AVERY

The other record on Ancestry - says Susannah GABEL
