Find a Grave corrections.
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 17:33 GMT (UK) »
Very impressed with the speed of correction.

This morning I sent in a correction to an incorrectly transcribed surname, two hours later I received an email confirming it had been accepted, a quick check showed the change had already been made. :D :D :D :D :D

If only it was as easy on certain other websites.

I hope you congratulated them.  :)  Always good to respond in the affirmative, rather than the negative. :-*
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I am glad its working for someone. I twice asked them to correct something and explained why it was wrong and where the correct information came from (death certificate). Its still wrong six months later !
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I have offered corrections in the past, once or twice.
I've never had a reply within hours, but within a week, yes.

I sent in a correction (relative given incorrect middle name), explaining all my sources & the ONE source (a newspaper article) which gave the wrong name but the person who submitted the details to Find A Grave refused to make any changes. The best I could do was add a note to the entry  :-\

I'm a contributor to Findagrave as part of my one name study (Bilcliffe and variants). The original contributor remains the manager of the memorial unless they pass it over to someone else.

When someone suggests an amendment or provides additional information the manager of the memorial is emailed and can either accept or reject the change. If they've lost interest or even died they may not reply, in which case nothing will happen.

In my experience most people respond quite quickly. Recently the email stage seems a bit unreliable, so unless the memorial manager goes on the site and notices that amendments have been suggested they might not know anything about it!

That's good to know, Marmaduke 123. I've been one of the unfortunate people who has never managed to find anything helpful via that site, despite the great work done on it. Thanks for your efforts, and all the others ... I may get lucky.... someday!

The entries are very variable. Some are just names and dates, others have a lot more information. I always provide a potted biography for mine, and the majority are linked to other family members.

They all come up on Ancestry now, so always worth clicking on the link. It's all free!

Yes, I've accessed it several times via "Ancestry". As I said, so far without luck, but you never know.... some day I might "dig someone up".
