Evan Ellis - Miller at Llanbedr
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 20:46 GMT (UK) »
Good evening

Can anyone help identify Evan Ellis parents/baptism please.
Basic facts are:
1. Miller at Llanbedr up to death in 1871
2. Married Bridget Jones in 1823 in Llanbedr.
3. Census returns all give birth details as 1797/8 in Llanenddwyn.

I cant seem to find any birth/baptism details in Llanenddwyn for that period. Does anyone have access to more detailed /extensive records than appear online. I have tried Ancestry; Find My Past; Family Search and FreeReg.

Thanks

David

Hi David,
FindmyPast do have baptisms (and burials) for Llanenddwyn for the period you need (at least they claim to be for Llanenddwyn, but FindMyPast is not always reliable).

Among them is the baptism of Evan son of Ellin Jones and Lowry his wife on 25 April 1797. The father's forename appears in the image, and is transcribed, as Ellin, which seems unlikely, perhaps Ellis is intended.

There is also a baptism for a possible sister - Alice daughter of Ellis Jones and Lowry his wife 9 Mar 1794

I think it might be Coed y Llelli because there is a burial of Ellis Jones in Llanbedr on ist July 1835, age 72. His abode is Coed Llelli

Thanks for this. It is a great help but it begs another question. How common was it for an offspring to take his father's given name as surname?
Bluntly
Why did the Evan Ellis for whom I am searching start of as Evan son of Ellis Jones and then finish as Evan Ellis.
Have you met this before anywhere [apart from Scandinavia].

Hi David,

I should have explained, this form of patronymic naming was the norm in Wales at one time. It was still in frequent use in the more rural, north-western parts of Wales until well into the nineteenth century.

You will find many references to it on Rootschat or try googling 'patronymics in wales'

Hi
Coed Llelli might be a corruption or misspelling of Coed Llechi. There is a house of that name in nearby Llanfair, in an estate. It was quite common for people moving house to 'take' the name with them, especially if their old house was being abandoned because of its condition. Also people would name their house after their ancestral home. The current existence of the name Coed Llechi in the district suggests to me that there was a place of that name there in the past.

HARLECH

Had a look at Baptism records for the area on Find my Past, and it appears that none were carried out  in some churches at various times, a neighbouring church being used for that purpose.
