Can Kodak Transparancies be turned into real photographs ?

Hi,

I was sorting through a huge bag of photos my elderly father has given to me and I found three little plastic boxes full of 'kodak transparencies' I believe they may date from between 1966 and 1969, does anyone know if I would be able to get these made in to proper photographs and which company would be able to do this?

Yes they can be scanned and printed.  There are quite a few firms advertising on the web which operate this service, this is just one of those firms.

You can also buy a small scanner which does 4 or 5 at a time and do it youself

Vicky, don't forget to factor in the amount of time it would take if you do them yourself. Scanning or photographing photographs and documents is quite tedious.

We did just this some weeks ago  - we went to the local library (free access but booked) where there is a really good scanner and did them ourselves - It took us just on two hours (two of us) to scan about 150 slides, but the results were great.  Free except for time.  To do the same job from a company was going to cost us $250.  (£120ish)

Well worth the time we spent, but yes time consuming and you need a friend to help load the 'trays' and to chat to whilst doing it!

My old scanner had a special adapter for slides. It worked realy well but yes, tedious. as was working out the correct date order and making them into a video, mind numbing. Great colours on these old slides though.  I'm not sure if you need an adapter, mine also did negatives.

I don't know where about you are, but there are places to be found online, I found a local shop here in Dorset.

I have just had 900 slides digitised, it cost a basic charge of £25 which include a memory stick, then 10 pence a slide, they were done in four days. It would have taken me forever to do them all.

I have transferred them to my laptop,  and backed up to an external hard drive, so I can print off as and when I want a print.

I've just binned another thousand of my old slides; over the years I've cut back from 8000 to 2000.  Of the remaining 2000, perhaps a quarter have either been transferred to the computer or had prints made from them.  If you've not started on this transfer as yet, might I suggest you buy a cheap little hand viewer, go through the slides and determine which, if any, are worth preserving?  You  might find that you are left with a couple of hundred, which will make the transfer process less taxing or costly.
