loobylooayr, I think the out of wedlock is a probability, but i am temporarily discounting the paternity case because on Walters marriage cert his father is recorded as Robert. Just musing, would Robert have traveled from Canobie to Sheffield in 1870 for an illegitimate sons  wedding ? ,or would Walter have just given his fathers name?
Thank You for your interest, bodger

Bodger,

I think you have to consider the Paternity case.
A Janet Telford pursuing an Armstrong for the birth of a child in 1843 in the area of Canonbie ??  :-\
Could be a co-incidence that 2 women of same name have given birth in same year to an Armstrong.
However you have to consider, as I said earlier, that Walter did not know his father's forename.  Or he nay have deliberately given the wrong forename . Chances are his natural father was not on the scene.
I have seen wrong names of 'absent' fathers many times on marriage and death certificates .

Looby :)

Only other thing is Bodger , are you certain this Walter Armstrong is the boy you are looking for. Where does he give for his place of birth on 1861 Census?

I am only sure of him from UK 1871 cen onwards because of matching family details, i had attributed him to the wrong family from unconfirmed details , i then discovered that the Walter i had used died as a young man in Scotland, this pushed me into getting a marriage cert. and discovered Robert as the father, so what i know of his birth from census 1871, b.1842 Border Reivers, 1881 b, ????, Carlisle (?)
1891, b, Dumfriesshire, 1901, in Sheffield, 1911, b. 1843 Roxborough
So as you can see his birth place was a moving target !!
Thanks for your help , bodger

I return from the 2007 thread  ;D

Baptism
Canonbie 17 Dec 1843
Walter Armstrong  natural son of  Thomas Armstrong and Janet Telfer, Born 25th October 1843.

I think Looby's info from the Dumfries HIs is most likely correct.

I would say that was Crawsknow, Gadget.

Bodger - there is a death for a Janet Telford aged 74 at Canonbie in 1891 on Scotlands People. It may be a long shot, but it would be interesting to see who registered her death. If Walter did it and gave his address , it could clear up whether your Walter was Janet's son. However, it could be that someone else registered Janet's death and you would be none the wiser  ::)  Just thought I'd draw it to your attention.
