I had an original post "by bodger on Tuesday 06 March 07 16:32 GMT (UK)  »" where from information supplied i incorrectly recorded Walters father as William Armstrong b. 1791 Newcastleton

There are a number of Walter Armstrong's born in Dumfriesshire on Scotland's People but none with the father Robert.

The only one I could find in Scotland was later and way up North.

ARMSTRONG   WALTER   ROBERT ARMSTRONG/ANNE ELLIOT    09/07/1851 Speymouth, Moray

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

The way ahead might be to track him down on the 1851 census. He would likely be living with his parents then.

Further to the above from Scotland's People 1851 census, Canobie, there is the following

 Janet ? Telford, head, Female , 36yr farm labourer, b.Canobie  ( i think, indistinct)
Walter Armstrong, son 7 yrs, at school
Elizabeth Telford, niece , 3 yrs
This Walter ties in with known details, but whats the story on his mothers name Telford ?

Any suggestions ? Thank You, bodger

Hi ,

I would reckon that Walter was born out of wedlock.
There is a Janet Telford in Canonbie on the 1841 Census who could be the same woman on 1851 -
Priorshill
HOGG     John  M   60  Agricultural Labourer   Dumfries-shire
HOGG   Jane    F     50                                  Dumfries-shire
TELFORD  James  M  20   Agricultural Labourer  Dumfries-shire
 TELFORD  Janet  F   20                                   Dumfries-shire
TELFORD    Jane   F  3m                                  Dumfries-shire
No relationships are given but could be Janet with a husband and child at her parents ?

As for Walter's father - there is a Paternity Case in 1845 https://www.scottishindexes.com/courtptranscript.aspx?courtpid=150558003

Janet Telford is pursuing Thomas Armstrong  of Greengatehouse, Middlebie for paternity of a child born 25th October 1843.

Looby :)

How about this for a theory ? but how would i prove it ?
1851 cen, Scotland
John Little       Head   Unmarried   63   M   Blacksmith (Master)   Dumfries, Canonbie
Robert Armstrong       Cousin   Unmarried   38   M   Blacksmith Journeyman   Dumfries,
Nicholas Mundell       [left blank]   Unmarried   42   F   House Servant   Roxburgh,

1851 cen,
Janet Telford       Head   Unmarried   36   F   Farm Labourer   Dumfries, Half Morton
Walter Armstrong   Telford   Son       7   M   At School   Dumfries, Canonbie        Elizabeth Telford       Niece       3   F       Dumfries, Canonbie            Margaret Kerr       Servant       9   F   House Servant   Dumfrieshire

Could Robert Armstrong age 38 be the father of Walter Armstrong age 7 via Janet Telford, age 36

The kirk session of each parish looked into illegitimate births and their minutes should contain details. The minutes are available to consult on line in the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh and certain other archives.

Hi Bodger,

I think Walter's father is not a Robert but a Thomas.  As reply#5 above.

If Walter named a Robert Armstrong on his marriage certificate as his father it could be that he did not know his father's forename and chose a random name

Looby :)
