Parental connections
« on: Wednesday 20 February 19 21:25 GMT (UK) »
hello - could anyone help me trace some clear evidence of the parents of my ancestor. I am pretty sure that I have the right family, because they lived next door in 1841, and have the same occupations and have the granddaughter staying in the 1851 census.

Child - Harriet Mowson 1811 Boston - 1850 leverton. Died from peritonitis following child birth.
Husband - Benjamin Pearce  (married 2 /2 1836)1816 - 1858
Father - (i think) William Mowson 1761 - 1833  Boston Lincolnshire
Mother - (i think) Anne Hodgson 1786 frieston - 1852 Boston

I have been unable to find a baptism for Harriet that would confirm parents.

any thoughts / ideas?
many thanks

If William Mowson married Anne Hodgson, then they didn't marry until 28 October 1817, so Harriet wouldn't have the Mowson surname.

Alternatively there is a marriage of a William Mowson to an Anne Holland on 8 December 1791.

Both marriages at St Botolph's Church, Boston.

There is a baptism of a Harriet Hodson (no g) on 2 August 1811 at St Botolph's Church, mother's name Anne.

Your William Mowson was born 1761 so he would have been 56 when he married Anne Hodgson so very unlikely to have been a bachelor.  However, I can't find a burial for the first Anne prior 1817 so perhaps the first marriage is a different William Mowson.

Lizzie - thank you for this find - this is taking me on the path that Harriet was illegitimate and possibly William Mowson was not her father but step father. Do you (or anyone ) know how I could get a copy of the baptism record to see if this assumption is right?

On her marriage in 1836, Harriet's surname is Hodgson with the middle name of Mowson.

Martha Mowson was one of the witnesses.

It's also on Findmypast where I saw it.  It's probably a bit clearer on FindMyPast too.  It shows that Anne was a single woman, unlike the other baptisms which give father and mother's name and mother's maiden name.

Although I can't find a death for Anne Mowson (the first Mrs Mowson) before 1817 when William Mowson married for the 2nd time, I have found a death for a Mrs Anne Mowson, on 16 June 1824 in Stamford, Lincolnshire age 67 sister of Mr William Mowson, Brewer.  Despite dying in Stamford, she was in fact buried 2 days later at St Botolph's, Boston.

I've no idea whether this is the "sister" of your William Mowson, but I wonder how many married women have the same surname as their brother?  It's quite possible that William and his first wife just separated and when he married his 2nd wife he just said he was a widower.  Who would know any better in those days?
