I am getting confused now with daughters and sisters  :)

In 1901, the  daughter Mary Ann is 18yrs old and presumably the daughter of Ambrose and Ann.

I looked last night and came to the same conclusion as you re Mary Hannahís birth and did not find her - will have another look.

That death wasn't on the list of coroners' accounts in Lancashire Archives. There were no ages on those I found.

Hello everybody, sorry, been away, just got back. I've been catching up with the latest. Fascinating! so perhaps the tragic school accident is true. If I understand correctly, we have:
- Ruth Stott, single, has daughter Mary Ann 1969
- 1971, Ruth living in Fathers home, granddaughter Mary H in residence, 3 years old
- 1978, burial Mary Ann Stott, 10yrs, by Coroner's Order
Forgive my ignorence, but what does "by Coroner's Order" mean?

On top of all this, there is a final episode to add to Hetty's story. She didn't stay alone for the rest of her life. She got together with another partner and had two more kids .... she must have really loved children!
Again, the details are a bit sketchy, I have just spoken to mum and the following are the details she could recall:
- He was called Harrison, mum knew him as Mr Harrison, I think I have been told in the past by an aunt that his name was Bob
- They had two kids, Emily and Bob. Bob died during or after the D Day landings, age 21. So that puts his date of birth at 1923. Emily was a couple of years older. Emily married and settled in Bramley Rotherham
- Mr Harrison died when mum was young, she thinks around 8 yrs, so that gives a date of around 1938
I'll see what I can find on Ancestry, tried before without success but had less detail.
Many thanks again to you all.

You understand correctly except that your dates are a century out. Mixing up centuries is a common problem in family history.  :)
Mary Anna was baptised in February 1869. She may have been born 1868. The 1868 birth registration for Mary Hannah looks most likely but not certain.
"by Coroner's Order" meant that the Coroner signed a form to release the body and allow burial to go ahead. Mary Ann's death was reported to the local Coroner for investigation. The corpse then became evidence and could not be disposed of without permission of the Coroner. Inquests were usually held within a few days of death in that era, maybe even the same day. It's not certain that this death was Ruths' daughter. It's another piece of evidence but it isn't proof.  Stott was a common surname in the area.
Unfortunately inquest findings were not archived. Local newspapers reported some inquests. Next step is to search newspaper collections now that we have a possible date.

The dates and age for Mary Ann/Hannah look very possible together with the burial annotation and residence of Thornham especially since we canít find her in 1881.
I have tried an online newspaper search with no luck.

Yes, a century out, perhaps a senior moment on my part!
Thanks again to you all, can't thank you enough.
You found an awful lot of information to add to my tree, and to inform my family who are amazed, none of my family had any idea about these stories.
I have learnt a lot, I now realize that there are a number of sources to explore in the search for information, it's not just ancestry.com.
I've loved the experience, I find it fascinating, when time allows I will give more time to it, back to work now though, just had a little break.
Thanks again.
