Devon/Dorset brickwall
« on: Friday 22 February 19 00:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have hit a bit of a brickwall which I am posting here as it may involve more than one county. This line seemed to jump between the two named counties.
Mods feel free to move if I'm in the wrong section.
I have an Ann Whitlock marrying a  (Rev) William Palmer in 1743 in Luppitt Devon. She was his second wife. In the same year a Mary Whitlock married a Richard Harwood in Luppitt. One of the Harwood sons married one of the Palmer daughters.
I cannot find a baptism for Ann Whitlock, nor a Mary. At this point I am leaning towards them being sisters. There is no other Whitlock entries in Luppitt other than 2 later burials: Hannah in 1765, and Joan in 1779. Joan left a will in the Devon wills, which are no longer available due to bombing in 1942.
I'm hoping someone out there has access to resources I don't that might show baptisms for Ann and Mary Whitlock in wither Devon, Dorset, or possibly even Somerset.
Thanks for reading this.

I may have some DEVON resources in book form from researching back in the 1970s ... It could be several weeks before I can check them.

Hopefully other Chatters will have already sorted this out for you by then.

Have you considered posting a brief summary on those county boards and then asking for replies to be made on this one board  :D

That's not a bad idea JM. I'll do just that, with a link on each back to this thread as you suggest.
Thanks.

 :D

Just a quick online armchair skim .... fingers crossed this will help others to confirm or eliminate these possibles.

Dorset, Chalbury

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJD4-JB2L
baptism 1 March 1726, Philip WHITLOCK, parents as James WHITLOCK and Ann

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJD4-JBG8
baptism 14 Jan 1729 Anne WHITLOCK, father as James WHITLOCK

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJD4-JJ65
baptism 16 Jan 1731  Mary WHITLOCK, father as James WHITLOCK

Possibility of others with James as the father at Chalbury, Dorset,  and the first one I have listed has the name of James’ wife …. :D  :D

Thanks for taking the time, JM. I wouldn't rule them out at this stage, but the baptism dates are a bit late if the two I am looking at married in 1743. Could be late baptisms....

Hello
Have you looked at the images for Luppitt?
Mr Richard Harwood marries a Mrs Mary Whitelock
and M William Palmer marries M Ann Whitelock
On FindMyPast both are indexed as Mrs Whitelock.
If so yes they may be sisters but they were born with a different surname.

Thanks Ciderdrinker and Hurworth.
I looked at the BT, and Interestingly the only two entries with either Mr. or Mrs. are those two.
Both husbands came from rather well to do families, so that would account for the Mr. I have seen other instances of single women given "Mrs" in registers, once again usually from families of higher standing. So I'm openminded on that one.
According to Burke's Landed Gentry, William Palmer married a Miss Whitlock as his second wife. No first name, but with some help found the Luppitt marriage.
Thanks for the input.
