Giavera to Thiepval
« on: Friday 22 February 19 09:30 GMT (UK) »
I have recently discovered that the WW1 memorial for Private Willie Normanton [1896-1916], of Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, is being (or has been) transferred from the Giavera Memorial in Italy to the Thiepval Memorial in France.

Does anyone know the scope of this action and whether it is (1) only for this man, (2) for all Giavera memorials, (3) a random transferral of men/women between other memorials?

I am asking in connection with the entries (on my Calderdale Companion website) for other men & women who may be affected by such moves and whose entry will have to be altered

Nothing on the news element of the CWGC web site except a late  2018 re-dedication of an individual at Giavera so best to ask the CWGC I'd suggest:

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

I received a message from the CWGC after it appears their first response went stray.

The message explained that

it is not uncommon from time to time, for internal research or research by members of the public, to bring to light evidence which indicates that a particular casualty died in a different theatre of war to that which was originally allocated to him, and thereby necessitating a change of commemoration. This is the case with Private Willie Normanton, where research revealed that he had actually died in France as opposed to Italy.  Arrangements are in hand to eventually have his name included on the Thiepval Memorial, and in the course of time, removed from the Giavera Memorial.

I hope this helps anyone researching their forbears who fought in WW1
