Ann Morris Alrewas/Tatenhill
« on: Friday 22 February 19 16:38 GMT (UK) »
I am just wondering if anybody can help me with my Morris research please. I am trying to identify the baptism and parents of my 5x great grandmother Ann Morris.

Ann Morris (of Alrewas) married William Scattergood (of Burton upon Trent) 23rd March 1812 in Alrewas by banns. Marriage witnesses William Swinwale and Elizabeth Scattergood. Please see attachment.

The marriage doesn't state whether Ann was a spinster or widow. I know William was a widower at the time of this marriage as his first wife Elizabeth had died. I can prove William's baptism and parents.

William and Ann had the following children baptised in Tatenhill:

Henry 1813
Mary 1814 (my 4x great grandmother)
Joseph 1815
Thomas 1817, buried 1817.

I believe Ann Scattergood was buried 8th November 1820 in Tatenhill. In the 1841 census, William was a widower.

I couldn't find a baptism at the record office for Ann Morris in Alrewas. I have seen a baptism for an Ann Morris 1779 in Barton under Needwood to parents John and Maria. I have discounted this baptism as this Ann appears to have married Richard Burton, 1814 in Barton and their marriage witnesses were John and Mary Morris.

I have also been researching neighbouring counties of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire to see if I can find a baptism.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.  :)

The Ann Scattergood that was buried 8 November 1820 was age 71 - well past child bearing age
1841 census does not state 'marital condition'

Hi rosie99,

Thank you for confirming her age at the time of burial. I found the burial years ago at the record office but being an inexperienced beginner, I didn't obtain a copy. I wasn't sure if it was her burial or not. At least I can discount it now.

With regards to the 1841 census - my error. I know in the 1851 Tatenhill census, William was a widower. Ann isn't listed with him in the 1841 census and I though she had passed away by this point.

Kindest regards,

Mandy

In the absence of another suitable burial I was wondering if the age has just been wrongly transcribed.  I can't see these PR images online to check.

rosie99 - I think you are correct about the age being wrongly transcribed. I've just checked my research notes from years ago. I read her age as 41 with a birth circa 1779. I've certainly learnt the importance years ago of obtaining a copy of the record! :-\

There's a marriage on the tatenhill bishops transcripts which has a total diferrent wife to the actual marriage.

Hi weste,

Thank you for checking the bishops trancscripts, I have never seen those. If possible, please could you provide the details of the different wife?

Kindest regards,

Mandy

The age at burial I posted was from the National burial index.  It just shows always check a transcript with the source,  easier said than done  ;D

rosie99 - Writing can be difficult to read to the best of times. I appreciate you having a look on the burial index though. :)
