Hit the wa!ll?
« on: Friday 22 February 19 18:21 GMT (UK) »
I know my GFx5 was a Thomas Ellis who married a Mary Parton in 1786 iirc, Wellington, on their marriage cert is is signed by John Ellis, father or brother I presume. Trouble is there are 2 likely candidates, one born 1766 to John and Sussanah the other born in 1764 to John and Jane. To make things worse they both have brothers called John! One married Mary the other it seems married a Priscilla Carman. I know the Cadmans were in the area too. Unless I can find either in a census\death cert I think I,m stuck!

Looking at the June 1786 marriage of Thomas ELLIS and Mary PARTON:
Both Thomas and Mary are illiterate - they both signed with their mark.

The witness John ELLIS though, has signed for himself, with a large bold and confident hand, that - to me - 'feels' young.

And I believe the witness himself was married in the same church, by same curate  February 1786, to a Catherine ONIONS. His signature is near identical, I think.

(I made an image comparison, but unable to post it here, as this is a 'Lookup' topic)

Cheers

An online tree - right or wrong - has:

John ELLIS
Born 4 Mar 1764 Dawley Magna, Shropshire
Died 17 Dec 1826, Wellington, Shropshire (aged 62 if born 1764)
Married Catherine ONIONS on 27 Feb 1786, Wellington, Shropshire
Catherine died 1854 (she's on the 1841 & 1851 Census

Parents: Married 5 June 1763 Wellington
John ELLIS : Born ? - Died 1792 Wellington
Susannah WILSON: Born abt 1739, Condover, Shropshire - Died 1821 Lawley Bank, Shropshire

Siblings:
Thomas b 1766
Susannah 1768
John b 1771

It still somewhat troubles me though, that your Thomas ELLIS was illiterate and his witness John ELLIS apparently was not - if these were brothers?

The John ELLIS of address 'The Rock', Wellington who died Wellington  on 17 Dec 1826 (the writing of his name of the burial register, looks like his own signature, ::)) is reported to be age 68, indicating a birth of around 1758.

Cheers
