Boer war death - Harry Podd

I have found a little information on Harry Podd who died in the Boer war of disease, 21 June 1900 at Johannesburg. He was in the Suffolk Regiment as part of the 1st Mounted Infantry battalion.

I think he was a resident of Whitton. I can't match him with families (parents), and the UK national archives pages say that there isn't a comprehensive list available (from them?).

PODD - On Thursday, June 21st, at Johannesburg, of enteric fever. Henry Joseph, 1st Suffolk, the dearly beloved husband of Anna PODD, aged 30 years, leaving a widow and two children to mourn his loss.

Mrs PODD of 513 Bramford Road, Ipswich, has received intimation from Johannesburg that her husband died of fever on June 21st. The sad news was conveyed in a most tender and sympathetic manner by the hospital authorities at the front, and also in a letter from the Major of the Regiment.



I've checked the 1901 census and no-one is living at 513 Bramford Road by then.

That's helpful, Daisy - I will look in earlier UK Census to see if I can find his parents and siblings

His parents could be Henry William Podd, his mother, Elizabeth Simpson, and his wife, Hannah Argent (nee King) based on the following:

The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects puts his place of birth as Ipswich, and his widow's name as Hannah. He is listed only as H. Podd, but his service number and date of death match.

Harry is often a name that Henry's use, and looking for Harry was getting nowhere, so:

The 1891 census has a Henry Podd, age 19, born Ipswich in a military camp (in the UK)
The only close match was:
Henry Joseph Podd  GRO reference: 3rd quarter,  Ipswich, vol  4a  pg 584 which gives a mothers maiden name of Simpson.

Looking for a marriage of a Henry to a Hannah gives
HENRY JOSEPH PODD married one of these people in 1st quarter of 1898
Louisa Moss, Hannah Argent

The only good match I could find for the 1871 census was in Ipswich:

Hannah was previously married to a Harry Argent in 1895 in Bury St Edmunds. (freebmd)

In 1901, Henry Sr and wife Elizabeth are living at Pine Cottages, 1, Bramford Road, Ipswich St Matthew, Ipswich, Suffolk (same road where the widow lived in 1900)

In 1905, widow Hannah Podd remarries to a Sydney Ernest Lee, and looking at them in 1911 shows the two children mentioned in Daisypetal's news article.  The eldest was from her first marriage, and is using the surname of Lee on census, but was born:

GRO Reference: 1896  M Quarter in BURY SAINT EDMUNDS  Volume 04A  Page 791

The child born while married to Harry Podd was listed surname Podd in census, and born:
    PODD, VICTORIA  ETHEL      mmn KING     
GRO Reference: 1899  S Quarter in IPSWICH  Volume 04A  Page 939

and a third  out of wedlock (between Harry Podd's death and Sydney Lee marriage) was also a Podd on the census, and born as:
    PODD, GLADYS  LEE      mmn KING

It all seems to work out, and sorry to prattle on..... can you tell I got my coffee maker fixed?!
