Pennsylvanian Marriage Licences Query
« on: Saturday 23 February 19 09:07 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone ever visit the PA State Archives? If so, I would be extremely grateful if someone could confirm the following marriage licence &, if possible take a picture of it to confirm the wording:

Date: Nov 1746 - Armstrong, John and Rebecca Armstrong

I have seen this entered on page 19 of 'Pennsylvanian Marriages Prior to 1790 - Names of Persons for Whom Marriage Licences Were Issued in the Province of Pennsylvania Previous to 1790'. By John B. Linn and William H. Egle.

Many thanks in advance,
Bob (thousands of miles away in England!)

It's not an image from the book but someone has typed the information from the book online for others to view.  The wording appears exactly as you have typed it.

Thanks for that. I copied it out word-for-word as it supposedly appears, but I really need confirmation that it is precisely as per the original. I'm hoping it is, but just need a pair of eyes to state that there have been no errors.
Cheers,

Do the PA archives hold the old records of the cities and towns that granted marriage licenses? You could ask them.
The states don't usually issue marriage licenses, in fact I don't think they ever do, but I'm almost positive. I haven't run into one that did.  It is done at the city or town level.
The editors of the book might have compiled their lists from old city and town records, newspaper accounts of licenses issued, etc. The book should say where they got their information. Then you'd need to track down the record of the Armstrong marriage itself.

PA Archives just sent me a scan of the original, so thanks to PA Archives, a great service, and thanks to you all for your help, too.
Cheers,
Bob
