Who was John Spears Buller
« on: Saturday 23 February 19 15:00 GMT (UK) »
Who was John Spears Buller? Did he really exist?
I would be interested to know if he was in anyway connected to the Buller family of Crediton, Devon and/or Morval, Cornwall. What I do know is that he appears on the marriage record of his son John Buller. John Buller married Margaret Wills in Brixham on 19 June 1838, John's father is recorded as being a Maltman, there is no indication of John Spears Buller being deceased. John Buller was born between 1809-1811, no record of his birth has been located and I have been unable to locate any BMDs for John Spears Buller.
It has been reputed that my Buller ancestors are part of a Cadet Branch of the Buller family, although at present I would not take it as being fact. I am also aware of the Bullor family in Brixham, and a John Bullor born 1777 to Thomas Bullor and Love Spray.
I'm hoping there is someone out there who can establish the existence of John Spears Buller and where he came from????

John's father is recorded as being a Maltman,

Have you had a look for the Maltman in 1841 census around the same area?

A John BULLOR was baptised at Brixham 29 Mar 1807. son of Anne BULLOR, spinster no father shown.
So, it is possible that the father's last name was SPEARS. Banns of marriage were called at Brixham for Anne BULLOR in April 1808 to a William JONES of HM Brig Liberty

Hi DOB7,
Thank you for your response,
I have that information already in the Buller Family Tree on ancestry, unfortunately while that maybe possible, I can not prove it. Certainly not to be ruled out.

Hi Milliepede,
Admittedly I haven't searched for Maltman in Brixham on census records. I shall make a point of searching the census records.

Is it possible that the name 'SPEARS' is a variant that comes from Love SPREY wife of Thomas BULLER?

Did you manage to find any more information about John Spears Buller? He is my 4 x Gt Grandad and I have just started hunting to see if I can verify the link with the Bullers from Morval which is shown on some Ancestry trees. My Gt Gran always said we were related to Sir Redvers Buller, but she died many years ago, before I got interested in family history and could quiz her!
