Just to clarify, the newspaper is in italics, and my own words in standard.

It would seem Joseph was involved in another mill:

Heywood Advertiser 02 April 1920

YEW MILL LIMITED
A new company to be known as the Yew Mill
(1920) Limited is being formed to take over the
undertaking  of the Yew Mill Company.  The
company's capital will be £300,000 in shares of
£1 each, on which 10s. per share will be called
up.  The directors of the company will be....

There is a big list of directors, one of which is Joseph Henry Clegg, manager of New Hey.

18 November 1939 - Rochdale Observer

HUGGING THE WHITE LINE

Joseph Henry Clegg of 103 Rochdale Road,
Milnrow, who was walking along Oldham
Road towards Thornham, said a car came
behind him from Rochdale and seemed to
be hugging the white line in the centre of
the road.  When the car got about ten yards
in front of him, he noticed in the light from
the car's lamps two men leave the footpath
to cross the road.  They were then about two
or three yards in front of the vehicle, one of
the men being two yards in front of the
other.  He heard the sound of the brakes
being applied, but did not see which of the
men was struck by the car.   He told the
driver of an approaching car that there had
been an accident and saw the the car
involved in the mishap had stopped.  Then
he noticed it move forward, and he thought
it was drawing in to the side of the road.
He never saw anyone get out of the car
whilst it was stationary. The car appeared
to be of the saloon type of the ten to twelve
horse power class.

The article then goes on for about the same length as above as to what another witness saw.  It never truly states whether the car left the scene or not.  Eventually, the last line in the long article states that the ambulance driver "took the deceased to the infirmary where he (Mills)  was stated to be suffering from a fractured skull and a fracture of the right leg".  This last sentence was the only mention at all of the victim!

Rochdale Observer 18 December 1940

HOUSE POSSESSION
Applications at County Court

His Honour Judge J. Fraser Harrison heard
four cases for possession of houses and rent
arrears at the Rochdale County Court on
Friday and he granted orders for possession
subject to the usual suspension of 28 days,
with one exception.
Mr. R. S. Clegg (Mssrs. J. Bright Clegg
and Sons) appeared for Emily Clegg, wife of
Joseph Henry Clegg of 103 Rochdale Road,
Milnrow, who applied for the possession of
the house "The Ahses," Milnrow, from Mrs.
Cryer, together with arrears of rent and
mesne profits of £8 5s.  Evidence was given
by Frank Butterworth, a clerk in the employ
of Messrs. J. Bright Clegg and Son, who
proved the serving of the notice to quit, and
by Joseph Henry Clegg.  The latter said that
the house was let on a weekly tenancy, the
rent being 7s. 1d. a week.  The tenant left
in May and though the furniture was there
the house had not been used and they had
had great trouble in tracing the tenant.
The house was wanted for some evacuees
from Coventry.
His Honour said he had noticed many
houses locked up soon after the war started.
People had gone off leaving everything and
he thought it was most unreasonable,
especially as houses were wanted so
urgently.  "I think it is most unfair to the
community that people should be allowed
to carry on in this way," he added.

The rest of the article is about the three other cases he was hearing.  A housing
shortage is one aspect of the war that I was not aware of.  This is why reading old newspapers is such a great learning experience.  I wonder if the Clegg lawyers are related?

Rochdale Observer 03 April 1943

CANTEEN PARTY

To mark the first anniversary of the open-
ing of the New Ladyhouse Cotton Spinning
Company Limited's canteen a workpeople's
party was held on Saturday.  The Eric Brown
Trio played for dancing, and during the even-
ing the mill choir, under the leadership of
Mr. Harry Howard, rendered several choral
items, Mrs. Florence  A Jones and Mrs. Molly
Hadfield being the soloists.  The doubling de-
partment gave a short play entitled "A peep
into the future," which was very well re-
ceived.  During the supper interval Mrs.
Joseph Henry Clegg officiated at the cere-
mony of cutting the birthday cake, and was
presented with a spray of flowers by
Maureen Pratt.  Mrs. Duckworth, the head
cook, was also presented with a bouquet by
Miss Joan Howard after Miss Emily Buckley
had expressed the apprecation of the
employees.  A vote of thanks was moved by
Mr. Albert Howard, and seconded by Mr.
Frank Warburton.

I thought I had a couple more items to look up.... I will post them if I can find them!
