Aha!

Rochdale Observer 05 August 1916

A very long article on a funeral for Councillor Henry Meadowcraft, manager of the Newhey Spinning Company which lists the folks attending, one of which was Mr. J. H. Clegg (manager of  the Haugh and Ladyhouse mills).

Rochdale Observer 12 August 1916

TRADE AND COMMERCE

Following on the death of Councillor Henry
Meadowcroft, manager for the Newhey Spin-
ning Company, a re-arrangement of officials at
the three ring mills is taking place.  Mr.
Joseph Henry Clegg, manager at the Haugh
and New Ladyhouse mills, is in future to be
Manager at the Newey and New Ladyhouse.
Mr. Milford Clegg, carder at the Haugh, is
taking over the duties of manager there.

Rochdale Observer 14 October 1916

At the Milnrow ribunal on Tuesday a good
deal was said about a rule of the Oldham
Cardroom Operatives' Association, which it was
stated prevents the employment of youths
under 20 years of age in the blowing room.  On
account of this rule the manager of the New
Ladyhouse Mill, Mr. Clegg
, said the associa-
tion would not let him replace a youth of 18,
called up for service, by one of 15.   It was
stated that in Rochdale youths under 20 were
working.  This, we believe is correct.  It is not
usual for blowing room jobs to be taken by
youths, but in the present exceptional condi-
tions, no opposition has been raised by the
Rochdale Cardoom Association to young men
of sufficient physique entering the occupation.
Indeed, such a course, is the only alternative
to the employment of women, and this of
course will only be adopted as a last resource.

Rochdale Observer 03 August 1918 - page 7

MILL SECRETARY JOINS UP-  Mr. Stanley
Yarker, secretary of the Newhey Spinning
Company
having joined the Army the officials
and overlookers of the mill have presented him
with a silver luminous wristlet watch and
tobacco pouch.  In making the presentation
Mr. Joseph Henry Clegg (the manager) said
all hoped that Mr. Yarker would have an early
and safe return.

Oh wowsers, what an absolutely magnificent find! I am so incredibly appreciative of what you have managed to find, and taking your own time to do so! It's amazing, the kindness of others!
I can't believe it, so now I know the mill(s) he managed! And have an insight into his style too! I am giddy with happiness, thank you!!

I couldn't help giggle at the "women of course a last resort" that's a perfect piece of history right there.

Absolutely brilliant, this has absolutely made my day! I am grinning from ear to ear. Thank you, so so much!!

It was my pleasure!  I enjoy learning how people used to live.

This link, I think is the New Ladyhouse in 1926, but I still can't quite figure it out in comparison to the map below, but you can fiddle with it:

It would seem the New Ladyhouse was close to the Albert?  Or perhaps they just have images for both on the same webpage??  Anyways, have fun with that!

There are other newspaper snippets -I can’t access them but bbart might be able to do so.
I was waiting to see if you had the references to him being a manager and his Probate details but it is good to see the full report there.

November 1939 Rochdale Observer
Joseph Henry Clegg looks to be a witness in a traffic offence or accident

December 1940
Emily Clegg applies for possession of a house re rent arrears
(The Cleggs still living at 103 Rochdale Rd)

Liverpool Echo March 1951
Joseph Henry Clegg, of Milnrow near Rochdale well known on the Liverpool Cotton Exchange - refers to his death estate

They all add to the bigger picture  :)

Hi Heywood -- yep, I saw those!  I will type them tomorrow, as it's getting late in my part of the world.  However, the one I am quoting you on, I was a bit iffy about.  There was a big wig in the Cotton Trading world named J H Clegg, and even a wonderful photo.... then I found out he was a JAMES H Clegg.... so I was going to check out JOSEPH's death date , as there are so many Cleggs in the mills, I thought perhaps the newspapers used the wrong name for that one.
Thats a job for the morning (after my coffee!)

Thanks bbart.

Probate 1951 - essential bits written out here
Joseph Henry Clegg, Milnrow died 22nd December 1950 died at The Private Patients Home, Manchester Infirmary.
Probate 10th March to Emily Clegg, widow and John Hopper Ritson, solicitor.

Joseph left a substantial sum of money. It is a shame that it doesn’t show his previous occupation/status.

The house, 103 Rochdale Road, Milnrow can be seen on Street View.

So it sounds like the right Clegg.... the article isn't much at all:

Liverpool Echo 17 March 1951

COTTON EXCHANGE FIGURE

Mr. Joseph Henry Clegg, of
Milnrow, near Rochdale, well known
on the Liverpool Cotton Exchange,
£41,249 gross  £40,441 net (duty
paid £10,139).

I never did find an obituary, but will double check in the morning!
