Welch of Shepton Mallett
« on: Saturday 23 February 19 22:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
I’m seeking information on James Welch b 1811, d after 1871.  He is my ggggf by my mom, Frances Welch.  So far, I have found him in the following records:

1833 entry for James Welsh and Elizabeth Hase (wedding in Somerset) in England Marriages, 1538-1973
1835 entry for William Hayes Welch (son’s christening in Shepton Mallett, Somerset) in England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
1846 entry for Robert John Welch (son’s christening in Shepton Mallett, Somerset) in England, Bristol, Nonconformist Church Records, 1777-1936
1851 entry for James Welch (residing on Town Lane in Shepton Mallett, Somerset) in England and Wales Census
1861 entry for James Welch (residing on Garston Steet in Shepton Mallett, Somerset) in England and Wales Census
1871 entry for James Welch (residing in Shepton Mallett, Somerset) in England and Wales Census
1874 entry for Henry Welch (son’s wedding in St. Cuthberts, Wells, Somerset) in England Marriages, 1538-1973

Birthplace is listed as Shepton Mallett in census entries.  I have been unable to locate James in available parish transcriptions or in the 1841 census.

If anyone has mention of James in their own genealogies I would very much appreciate it if you would share your information.  I can provide what I have on James’ nonliving descendants, if it would be of interest.

If anyone is willing to perform a parish record lookup (possibly at Ss Peter and Paul in Shepton Mallett or at local non-conformist congregations), I would also appreciate that.

Thanks for considering my request.
Sincerely,
Eric

It looks like there are two James Welches in the 1841 Shepton Mallett census, both with similar dates of birth.  The one identified by Carole is different than the one identified by wivenhoe.

The James (identified by wivenhoe) whose kids include William Jane Mary Eliza and Robert  is part of the line I am following.  Interestingly, that line has Roberts in every generation from 1844 to 2004 so the possibility that Robert and Elizabeth are James' parents in the SS Peter and Paul register sounds likely.

Does anybody have any ideas where to find information about the birthplace of Robert and Elizabeth?

Hi again.
Since I am new to Rootschat, I might need some remedial instruction. Should we close out the original lookup request for James and should I post a separate new request for Robert?

I very much appreciate the work already completed and I don't want to appear dissatisfied by immediately posting a second request in the original thread.  Please let me know the best way to proceed at this point.

Thanks again for the help provided!
Eric
