Carrick on Shannon Workhouse
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 16:04 GMT (UK) »
My great (x2) grandfather was James Moraghan (born about 1832 in Roscommon) who died in Birmingham on the 6th December 1910 (under the name of James Moore). On the marriage certificate of James to Ann McLoughlin in Birmingham (28th April 1850) it states that James' father is Owen Moraghan, farmer. I have been able to trace only two Owen Moraghans (aka Morahan) in Roscommon (Owen 1800 - 1870, farmer) and Owen (1807 - 1867, labourer). Owen Morahan (1807 - 1867) died in the Carrick on Shannon Workhouse of phthisis (pulmonary tuberculosis) on the 9th February 1867. Does anybody know if there are any detailed workhouse records still available for the period around Owen's death?

Hello and welcome  :)

There is this baptism with the name Moran  :-\

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633914#page/38/mode/1up

Boyle 27th January 1833

It is in Latin so has Jacobum for James and Eugenii - Owen.

Workhouse records - scroll down to Leitrim County Library records

There are births for Morahan name with a father Eugen.. but I can’t see a James. It is worth keeping that name in mind though if looking at Latin church records.

Thanks for your reply. I know that my (x3) grandfather is a Moraghan and I have two possibilities (as mentioned in my original post). I wanted to know about the workhouse records to see if it could throw any light on Owen Morahan who died there in 1867 (family, name of wife etc). It looks as though a visit to the Leitrim County Library will be required.

There are no records for the birth of James as I have been through all the parish records that are available.

Yes. The death certificate for Owen on the 19th February 1867 states that he died at the workhouse, Carrick on Shannon.

Yes. The death certificate for Owen on the 19th February 1867 states that he died at the workhouse, Carrick on Shannon.

Yes, I saw those deaths.
I meant is that the correct area for your grandfather James as there are one or two other references to Owen Morahans.
