John Upton of Grantham
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 18:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Just found on Lincs to the past site:

Reference 3-GL/1/11/2 dated 10 July 1800:

Request made by John Upton that his allowance from the Society shall be paid to his children Frances, John, Elizabeth and Catherine.

Would anyone on here know what "The Society" is?

Thank you

There was a charity, early 1800, called the "Grantham Benevolent Society" (source Stamford Mercury, 26 Nov 1813)

Possibility?

Hi Ng
The "Grantham Benevolent Society" was started 1810 from Finkin Street Methodist Church which was for the relief of the sick and poor regardless of religion. Apparently there is a Preston's Visiting book and Account books in Lincolnshire Archives.

Hi,

Have found that it's actually The Grantham Old Amicable Society. Which ran from the 1600' to 1939.
