Jenkins family of Hawarden
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 19:05 GMT (UK) »
I have got back to the Hawarden baptism of John Jenkins 26/8/1683 (and his sibling Thomas in 1679), to a father Edward.

Edward Jenkins would be born around 1650/60, and married around the late 1670's. I can find no appropriate records at all for Edward, in North Wales & Cheshire. Does anyone with local knowledge have any bright ideas?
I realise that during the Civil War and Commonwealth, parish record keeping was not at it's best!

I have more or less complete Hawarden Register transcripts if I can help anyone else.

Thanks for reading this.
Jenkins: Guilden Sutton/Plemonstall, Manley, Bebington: Cheshire. Wales, Hawarden Fl
Hughes/Jenkins pre-1650 north Wales., possibly Anglesey/ or Huyish of Somerset.

Lawton: Birkenhead, Wirral, Staffordshire.

Williams: Llanbeblig/Caernarvon.

Many thanks to IJDisney, Old Bristolian & Gadget for your suggestions, they certainly widen the search criteria.
Y DNA (father to son) is direct to 1683, so the name change, for the reasons you have suggested, must have occurred before then. Some USA 'Hughes' have the line going back to Rhodri Mawr over a thousand years, which seems quite a leap of faith !
Thanks for your thoughts, I will look at them closely - they are very much appreciated !

Hi Twdyr,
I have taken my Jenkin(s) line back to John bapt in Hawarden 27th Jun 1731. He was the son of John Jenkin of Hawarden. John (senior) was married to Martha, I think. If you have any information on these I would be grateful to learn of it. I have the Hawarden Transcripts produced by the Clwyd Family History Society.

Hi Ray,
Looks like we share the same family !
John Jenkins (1731) m Ann Bennion in 1762. I have the Bennions going way back in Cheshire.
John Jenkins Sr (1683) m Martha Hughes in 1712. I have her family going back to the 1630's
They are my 5th and 6th GG/Parents respectively.

I got my transcripts from Clwyd FHS as well.
If I send you a private message I can let you have details of my tree.
Many thanks
Philip

Thanks for pointing that out Gadget, yes same family, with a DNA emphasis.
It's great to have such knowledgeable help from you, and WRJones, (distant cousin) - he has taught me all I know !
With gratitude,
Philip

I didn't know that you were related to WR!  I think that I'm very distantly related via a marriage. We did work it out at one time.  We've known each other for many years.

I don't think I have any Jenkins in my tree but have most of the other Welsh surnames and, of course, many aps and vchs, mainly from Denbighshire, Merionethshire, Montgomeryshire and Flintshire (Hanmer/Emral).

WRJ is related through the Lea family of millers from Flints and Shrops, and therefore the Hanmer & Newnes lines. Eleanor Lea (1837), from Chirk, married Edward Jenkins.
My maternal line is Jones from Flint, and Williams from Caernarvon - with those names, needle and haystacks come to mind !

WRJ has been a great help in the past, and did one time say that you both go a long way back. I must drop him a line and hope is well.

Thanks
Philip
