John Henry Boyd - Imbecile Help
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 21:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Has anyone come across this in their research my grandads Brother was called this in his army records when he was trying to get out to help support the family. My Grandad was Samuel George Boyd born 25th April 1896 Mother Mary Boyd and Father Samuel. Other Brother was David Boyd. He joined the army in 1912 and left 1914. trying to find out what happened to John his brother David was shot in 1922 and Robert James his other brother died in 1904.

Any help would be great. Any asylum records i can try? He was with family in 1914 but parents moved in with his sister Mary and husband and come Davids death in 1922 he wasn't listed.

The term "imbecile" was formerly used by psychiatrists to denote people with an IQ between 26 to 50.
Those with an IQ of 0-25 were termed "idiot", and those with an IQ of 51-70 were termed "moron".

That's interesting KG.  I assumed these terms were just different descriptions of a person with low intelligence, I didn't realise each term (idiot/imbecile/moron) referred to different levels of intelligence.  You learn something new every day on Rootschat  ;D

There's a John Henry Boyd on a passenger list in 1929 Londonderry to New York.

Single born abt 1898 Irish farm labourer.  It does say he can read and write though.

Ah but not born Belfast  -  Monaghan so probably not the right chap.
