James TERRY, born 1837, Fareham, Hampshire
« on: Monday 25 February 19 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

James TERRY is confirmed by TNA ADM 139/263/26221 to have enlisted in the Royal Navy on 02/01/1856.   Can anyone suggest please how I can research his continuing service?

Thank you

Try looking for him on ADM 188/3 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C517557 (download for free)

He doesn't come up in any of the other ADM documents that are relevant.

He is in ADM 188/3.  Served 1 year and discharged 17 Jan 1857.  The record is a register only so apart from showing he stared at HMS Excellent, there is no other detail.  Whether his discharge was by purchase or free is not clear as the latter would be written in red and that doesn't come out on the image!  My guess is that as he had been rated Boy 1st Class, he would have had to purchase his discharge at £8 for under 3 years service.

Good Morning MaxD,

I researched ADM 188/3 as you suggested with every due diligence and found no reference to him.    This worries me on many fronts, especially my eyesight, but that is my problem.

Nevertheless, thank you for the information, extremely helpful, and also dovetails neatly with the thoughts of Daisypetal (I was in the process of responding to her but overtaken by your posting!!).I shall now revisit all the other Indexes, Census etc., just to check my eyesight :o

Thank you again,
