mounted staff corps Crimea

how can I find the number of Charles Mason who I believe was recruited into the mounted staff corps Crimea from the metropolitan police force. (his police record state that he resigned to go to the Crimea and after the conflict returned to the police force,)
Any information about this military unit will be appreciated

He appears in the  Crimea medal roll as No 42 Corporal Charles Mason.

The Mounted Staff Corps were a form of mounted police under the Provost Marshal.  The Corps had been out of service but was raised again for the Crimea and staffed with volunteers, many from the Irish police.  See histories of the RMP etc.0

Many thanks I had found that medal reference but thought the 42 referred to a register in which he must appear as it seems far shorter than other military numbers I have found. Would he have entered as a corporal? due to his previous police work? Or would it be possible to find any mention of him attaining that rank?

His record has, unsurprisingly,  not survived. 

I think it would be fair to assume that his rank was a result of his experience but if you were able to go to Kew, you could riffle through the muster book (there is only one) which would record his presence and his rank to confirm/deny my assumption.

I failed to address the number query.

The column in which it appears is clearly headed Regt No.  The small numbers in the corps will have determined the numbers themselves, I note the Sergeant Major has the number 1 - good for him!
