ANN and ELIZABETH MAJOR, daughters of SIR JOHN MAJOR Bt.
« on: Monday 25 February 19 18:56 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please find the baptismal details for Ann and Elizabeth Major, daughters of John Major and his wife Elizabeth (nee DALE)? Any other infants recorded would be useful as well. I'm not sure exactly where they were baptised but BRIDLINGTON would be a strong favourite followed by SCARBOROUGH.

John Major came to Suffolk after a successful period in his life as an iron ore importer. He was also an importer of timber etc from the Baltic and became an MP in 1761. He had property in London, Thornham, Worlingworth and East Grinstead and in 1767 his daughter Elizabeth married the 2nd Duke of Chandos - that must have cost him a few bob in the dowry!

Many thanks.

Hi,
I believe it would be BRIDLINGTON.
I have various strands of information (newspapers, monuments etc) which all lead me to different birth years for these ladies. Family Search gives baptismal dates which I would like to have confirmed. In the case of high-ranking people, the birth date would probably be given in the baptismal entry.
Thank you for your help.

St Mary, Bridlington - 25 January 1723 - by Licence

John Major, Master Mariner (aged 25) and Elizabeth Dale, spinster of Key (aged 22)

Is this the couple?

Yes, definitely, and if at all possible, i'd like to know if there were children who died during infancy.

Thank you for your assistance.

There is a baptism at St Mary, Bridlington - 3 January 1728  :-\

Elizabeth, daughter of John Major of Easton, Yeoman

Nothing for Ann.

BumbleB,
Usually a register gives the wife's details such as "Elizabeth, daughter of John Major and Elizabeth his wife, nee Dale" - is this not there?

Early records are very hit and miss.  Sorry that is all that is written in the parish records - image is available on FindMyPast.

Earlier baptism, also at St Mary, Bridlington - 13 January 1726

Eleanor, daughter of John Major of Easton, Yeoman

ADDED:  Be very thankful you weren't looking for a child called Joseph in 1728

Entry reads:  Joseph   Bastard Child - 26 January 1728   :(
