British Army service records lookup please c1800
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 13:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I would really appreciate a lookup. I'm trying to find Robert Carey born Ireland c1765? I know from his sons baptism records that he was at that time (1804) in the 3rd Royal Garrison Battalion in Jersey.

Thanks

Quite possibly yes! I don’t know anything about him other than what I wrote before and that he married an Ann, no idea where or when and that they had a son, James, born in January 1804 in Jersey.

Hi
Is transcribed as Currey and Curry elsewhere.
Place of birth does look Obelix near Murrowbough or Marrowbourgh or something like that. Queens County.
While I ponder that, someone who resembles him in WO 116, Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Disability and Royal Artillery Out-Pensions, Admission Books

Thank you! Interesting.. I believe it says Maryborough, Queens
Obelix is Abbeyleix, County Laois and very close to Maryborough.

Can you read what that says first? why he was there? I think it says 'worn out'. He was in the regiment of Major Francis William Cashell, I see he became Lt Col Cashell in 1811 (10th Regiment of foot) I am assuming Robert was no longer fit to serve his regiment so was sent to the 3rd Royal Garrison/Veteran Btn This must be the right Robert!?

Hi
The gist of WO 121
His Majesty's 3d Royal Veteran Battalion
Robert Cairey(?) private in Alex Munn's Company
born in parish of Obelix nr Murrowbough in county of Queens
enlisted at nineteen years
served in said Battalion 7 years 182 days
lame and worn out (rendered unfit and discharged)
description - about 58 years of age
5' 10"
Browne hair
Grey eyes
Dark complexion
trade Labourer

Service
4th Horse - 29 Apl 74 to 28 Apl 90
21st Foot -  29 Apl 90 to 28 Apl 96
59 Foot - 29 Apl 96 to 28 Apl 98
Invalids - 29 Apl 98 to 24 Dec 02
3 RV Battn - 25 Dec 02 to 24 June 10

All as private, total 36 years 57 days
Then in next column seems to say Total Service 39 years 57 days
included seems to be 6 years in East or West Indies
And this was dated 24 June 1810, at Jersey.

He has signed as Robert Carey, noting that 6 months clothing due?
John

Hi
Yes, it says worn out (better on full screen!)
Is it him? You would need a military expert, I think, to advise. I am most definitely not that!

There might be a couple of years age difference? Years service is possibly about right, your man was in the Invalids then.
TNA has him as Robert Keary, so where had that come from? On WO 121 it could be Carrey or Cairey (I changed my mind!) Signature for sure is "Robt Carey"

Thank you so much for all your help.

I think it is my man, too much of a coincidence to be in the 3rd Vets Btn? I think that Carey/Keary/Kerry could just be down to how his name was heard? All the names sounds alike, he would have had a nice Irish accent I should imagine too. I found one document just now for regimental registers of pensioners and underneath his birthplace was noted 4 years W. Indies.

On the Baptism it says: James son of Robert Carey of the Third Royal Garrison Battalion and of Ann his wife was baptised on the fifteenth day of January one thousand eight hundred and four. Sponsors- James McNarnee/Namee? -Robert Carey- Elizabeth McNarnee/Namee

Hi
It does seem likely to be the same chap, that was my initial reaction. But I'm always cautious!
Looks like there might then be a few records around, with Robert's surname perhaps being spelt in different ways.
But who is Robert Carey the sponsor?
