A spot of luck!! Feeling accomplished!

My ancestor John Crossley had a grandaughter living with him called Ann.  "grandaughter" in one census, "daughter" in another.  I could not find this girl's birth or baptism anywhere.  The only one that might fit was the daughter of someone else.  After many years, I'd forgotten about solving this mystery.  Then last week I was looking through the parish register for something completely different, and came across an entry that had clearly been over-written by the vicar....Ann daughter of Charles and Mary Crossley was now altered to Ann daughter of Mary Charlesworth, spinster (quite a few years after she'd been born).  The BT had only the mother's details.  Ooh, Charles is my ancestor, so this was before he married and had another 10 children!

Then Ann very helpfully named Charles Crossley as her father when she got married!  Good girl!  A feeling of mission accomplished, it's great!

Lucky find....the best information is that which is found when you are looking for something else

One of my ancestor's was illegitimate, so one line was defunct, until I found when she was married in Church she gave her Father's Surname - (which was then scored out by the registrar)  not got any further but at least I now have a surname.

I have come across this before, but we already knew the father's name from the poor law records.  In this instance it was much needed proof.

As an aside, I checked the Crossley family on various public Ancestry trees and I am amazed at the totally wrong information on so many trees.  I think there's been some copying going on!  Lots of mistakes on all levels - mixing the various families up etc - but so many people have got this girl down as the daughter of the couple she was living with.  Yes, one of the census returns did say daughter, but the other said grandaughter.  Surely this should cause one to investigate further?  Obviously not!
