Sarah Jane LYNN(E) Tasmania
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 23:51 GMT (UK) »
Seeking information on the parents of Sarah Jane Lynn(e). She was supposedly born in Tasmania according to newspaper and police reports, and was sometimes known as "Darkey Jinny". In newspaper reports she was described a being a "creole girl" and in Tasmania Police Gazettes as being a "Mulatto".
She was in both the Hobart and Launceston areas and was imprisoned in 1874 for larceny by the Supreme Court, which had her age as 27 so a birth year of around 1847. However, a later 1876 newspaper report had her age at 34.
She did have many minor brushes with the law resulting in fines and small sentences.
Her mother is mentioned in a newspaper report in December,1872, but it does not name her. She reportedly had helped her daughter out of her last police 'troubles" about 5 weeks previously.
Thanks in anticipation.

Article here about a St Helena mother and her seven children brought to Hobart in 1851 from Tristan D'Acunha, the father, a scot named Lind having died.

Date doesn't quite fit with being born in Tasmania, but still worth considering

Good find Matthew, well worth looking into.

After some googling i found that her name was Catherine Lind and his name was James Lind.

I havent been able to connect Sarah to them yet so i feel its the right family.

Thought i would have a dig around on the members who arrived in 1851 and see if anything links Sarah to them.

Three of the children of Mrs Catherine Lind, Agnes, Clara and James were in the Queens Orphan School for a number of years - http://www.orphanschool.org.au/listorphans.php Enter Lind as the family name.

I wonder if Catherine was pregnant with Sarah Jane on the 'Bengal' voyage and gave birth sometime after she arrived here (after 21 Jan. 1851). That would give her the credentials for being listed as a 'native' in some of the police reports. Since civil birth registrations didn't officially start until 1854 may not be a birth registered for her. Baptism would be only likely source for confirmation.

Cheers,

Peter
