Baker burials at Ilminster
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 02:58 GMT (UK) »
Greetings.
I'm looking for a couple of burials at Ilminster. They are supposed to have taken place at the Old Meeting (Presbyterian) which I believe is now an Arts Centre.
In a book called Burke's Colonial Heritage (?) the following were buried:
John Baker of Ilminster, August 1852
Mary Anne Baker nee Giffard his wife, January 1843
Both at the Old Meeting.
So to my questions....
Does the graveyard still exist? It's supposed to contain some of the priests and some of the town luminaries. Early records indicate that you passed through the graveyard on the way to the church entrance.
Are any of the grave stones recorded anywhere?
The records are on Ancestry up to 1837. Does anyone know what happened to newer records? They don't seem to be on the Non denominational web site either.

I'm about to send an email to the South West Heritage Trust to see if they can help.

Thank you and kind regards,
Keith Jeffery

Yes they are on the NBI which is available on Ancestry's rival or on CD rom.
Someone has transcribed their gravestone so I assume it's still there.

John died 27 Aug 1852 ,Mary Ann 26 Jan 1843
Some of their 12  children William 1808,Matilda 1814,Henry 1832 age 18
John was a native of Ilton Gent.
It would be nice to look yourself if you have access as there is more .

Thanks for that. They are in the Ilminster Old Meeting (Presbyterian) records. These are on Ances (cough cough) up to 1837.

South West Heritage Trust has them from 1837 to the 20th century.

Once again, thanks, Keith

Hi Ciderdrinker

I was looking at the images for Ilminster that I have been given access to by Somerset Archives & for JAN 1843 there were 6 burials non of which were on 26th & AUG 1852 when there were no burials for this month.  I was looking at the actual images in the hope that these burials would have been marked as reburied from Old Meeting

All the best

Phil

ps Im glad you found them for Keith but I cant understand why they are not on the images held by Somerset Archives which I could view
Worcestershire - Heeks, Maiden, Pinchin, Hartland, Tredwell, Holliday, Morton, Collins, Aldington, Saunders
Oxfordshire - Gomm, Hamblet, Austin, Winter,
Herefordshire - Lowe
Radnor - Lowe, Powell
Gloucestershire - Holliday, Pinchin

Hi Keith

Ive been having a browse through Ancestry & found something that should be of help you.

Old Meeting Presbyterian, Ilminster
Sarah Sophia d/o Jno/Mary Anne Baker Born 31 MAY 1809 Bap 10 SEP 1809
Ilminster non Conformist Indipendant
Emily d/o Jno/Mary Anne Baker born 16 FEB 1802 Bap 1 APR 1802

I also looked on find my past but could not see the exact dates for the burials that Cyderdrinker posted but Im probably not as familiar with find my past as he is so don't wish to start an argument.

All the very best

Phil

ps John & Mary Anne are also on the 1841 census & John & the 2 daughters Ive sent details of are on the 1851 census at Ilminster
Worcestershire - Heeks, Maiden, Pinchin, Hartland, Tredwell, Holliday, Morton, Collins, Aldington, Saunders
Oxfordshire - Gomm, Hamblet, Austin, Winter,
Herefordshire - Lowe
Radnor - Lowe, Powell
Gloucestershire - Holliday, Pinchin

Thank you kindly for that.

I too had a look through both Ancestry and FindMyPast. The Ilminster Old Meeting records on Ancestry only go up to 1837 as far as I can see.

Thanks to Ciderdrinker for the clues and pointers.

They aren't in the National Burial Index (FindMyPast) (also as far as I can see). They are in the Somerset Monumental Inscriptions (also on FindMyPast) as a plaque on the wall of what is now an Arts Centre and was then a Unitarian Church.

It would be interesting to find out if that plaque still exists. I sent an email to the Ilminster Town Council to see if they have a local historian who may be able to help. So far, no response. Ah well.

Once again, thanks, Keith
