procedure for compiling electoral registers 1930-1931
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 13:55 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to confirm that back then each household completed a form with the names etc for everyone in the house who was eligible to vote and said form was either collected or posted to the relevant office?

I don't have time to look through it just now, but you might find the answer in the Introduction of this downloadable guide from the British Library:

https://www.bl.uk/britishlibrary/~/media/subjects%20images/government%20publications/pdfs/parliamentaryconstituencies.pdf
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

From memory, I think the household registration form was introduced in the 1843 Registration Act, so
certainly would have been used in 1930-31.

Thank you  both.

Ray, I looked at the link, but couldn't find anything relevant in there - which is possibly why you removed it?

Steve, that is what I needed to know :-)

I tried the newspaper archive since posting and snippets from 1928 through to 1933 seem to confirm that forms were indeed handed out and needed to be returned by a specified date.

Which solves my current (in a long running series) problem regarding the following entry in both 1930 and 1931 electoral registers:

80 Mansfield Street, Arygle Polling District L, East Central Ward

R O       Mcgargle, Hugh
Rw  Dw    Mcgargle, Erybus

ERYBUS ??

This Hugh McGargle (one of many) married a Sarah E McGowan in 1929. Likely birth reg shows she had a middle name of Evelyn. That is confirmed by his 1940 enrolment form for the Home Guard, where he says his wife is 'Evelyn' and his handwriting for his signature is awful :-)

I'll settle for the folk who tried to read it just giving it their best shot when looking at what he had written down:-)

My apologies arthur, it was you , not Ray, who posted the link. I do appreciate it - even though I seemingly ignored you and didn't say thank you!
(its these McGargles, they are frying my brain!)

That's OK - I was about to go out when I posted and have only just got back to this, so I wasn't feeling ignored in the slightest!
