Military questions
« on: Wednesday 27 February 19 17:49 GMT (UK) »
In 1841 my 3xgt uncle, Henry Tann was a 20 year old private in the 16th regiment of foot at Canterbury Infantry Barracks. By 1848 he had swapped regiments to the 32nd regiment of foot and with them had fought in the 2nd Sikh war, winning a medal for Sutly.

Why would a soldier swap regiments?

He appears still to be in the Punjab in 1851

The death duty register of 1852 shows Henry of Union St Pimlico. His executor was his siter Mary Ann of the same address. At first I thought he had come home from India and died but I'm now wondering if the Union St address was just his home address and he died abroad? He was only 30. I can't find a death certificate either.

Any suggestions?

Love Lynne

The 1852 Death Duty register entry refers to his father Henry Tann who died in 1847. The PCC will documentation shows that administration was granted to his daughter Mary Ann Walsh in 1852.

Why would a soldier swap regiments?
Mainly because he was ordered to. A battalion would be removed from strength in one regiment and added to strength in a regiment where something was going on. It was easier for admin as events were recorded locally.

Thanks Shaun, I should have realized that. Now I don't know when or where he died.
