1841 seems to have him at the Dinsdale Spa Hotel near Darlington. There are quite a lot of references to this hotel in the newspaper archive - worth a look. Ads refer to Thomas and Margaret Forsyth. So was he in business with his daughter?

Note also the marriage of daughter Margaret in Durham County Advertiser 22 April 1836

At Dinsdale on Monday last Mr  Matthew Usher, coach manufacturer Newcastle to Miss Margaret Forsyth of Dinsdale Hotel and only daughter of Mr Thomas Forsyth, Town Marshall of Newcastle.

Matthew Usher died 1844 and left a will. Ads suggest Forsyths gave up Dinsdale Hotel in 1845. It actually appears he was declared bankrupt in 1845 (google Thomas Forsyth Dinsdale Spa Hotel).

Interesting William, thanks!

My main interest now is before 1826 and particularly before 1816.

Thanks again - I have him pretty much worked out now, but I'm still pondering Kent. That would be the best place for him if he was a soldier but I couldn't find him in an online search - that doesn't mean he wasn't one, just that I couldn't find him. I found a couple of things about him in the Courant today that were interesting too.
