Copyright query for beginner
« on: Thursday 28 February 19 09:38 GMT (UK) »
Before I actually do it, can I post a Google Drive (no login shareable) link to a download of an 1862-1863 image of a pair of pages from a CoE baptism record book. Digital source Ancestry. Image would be as downloaded and without modification (noting the T&Cs for FindMyPast and Ancestry suggest it might(??) be OK if you leave any copyright notices unaltered).

Or do I have to post the Ancestry link and leave the query to someone who happens to have a subscription?

I'd really like to understand the whole copyright scenario a bit more with genealogy... But I do have a very specific query that needs to show a few records for inference.

On a related note, in general, can I republish images of censuses, baptism records, banns etc as part of my tree?

If not, I assume I would be OK to transcribe the relevant records myself and post that in my query here?

Many thanks, Tim

You can post a snippet of an image if you cannot read what it says, otherwise you will need to transcribe it.  You can also post the link alongside the transcription.

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Transcription for this board it is.

But I would like to understand the copyright issues a bit more in general.

Crown Copyright as I understand it, suggests I can republish freely if I don't alter it. But that's assuming I digitised it direct from source.

Copyright may also be owned by the company who digitised the image. Anyone have a feel for what Ancestry and FindMyPast allow you to do with images that are relevant to your own tree? Or shall I go ask Ancestry directly.

Cheers, Tim
