Accrington place name - Loder Terrace, Burnley Road
« on: Thursday 28 February 19 14:51 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help to find any map with the address of Loder (or Loder's) Terrace in Accrington.  According to the 1861 census it is described as 'part of Burnley Road called Loder Terrace'.

All the maps I have tried so far come up with nothing, so can anyone pinpoint this, or lead me in the right direction please.  I have gone up and down on streetview in the hope that some of the terraces have the name inserted into the stonework, but can't see it.

Susan

By doing an address se\arch on findmypast I think it is in the region of
RG09
Piece number   3063
Folio   97
Page   47
and the enumerator's writing looks more like LodAr to me. Route description on ancestry the terrace comes after Avenue Rd & both sides of Abbey St.

ADDED: a map here but can't see the Terrace named.

I think there was a "Loder's Terrace" in Accrington, from some death record I saw. I'll have a look on an old map I've got.
I believe the name might have come from a carter or 'bus firm?

- That might have been the reference where I saw the name "Loder's Terrace" before.

Thank you everyone for the input so far.

Josey is correct with the reference for 1861.  RG09, Piece number 3063, Folio 97, and Loder Terrace runs from page 47 to 52.

It must be between Avenue Parade and Burnley Road, but not on the maps.  There was, and still is, a Back Burnley Road so possibly the Terrace was there.  A cotton mill stood between Back Burnley Road and Water Street, and the occupant at the first addess was a cotton manufacturer, which possibly adds credence to my theory.

It may have been a terrace of houses facing Burnley Road rather than an actual small roadway as we know it.

ADDED: Perhaps not according to this clip: 141 Burnley Road was between St John's Terrace & Loder Terrace.

It was very common for rows of houses on a main  road to be called *** Terrace, and are not normally named on maps.

!41 Burnley Road is between Arago Street and Foster Street.
