Stephen can you give me George's year and place of birth? What census records have you found him on so far?
George Pitt was born on 29th January 1880 in 14 Lansdowner Place, Southwark, London to William and Angelina Sophia Pitt. He's living there on the 1881 and 1891 census. On 21st May 1899 he marries Amy Caroline Moody. Both of them lie on the wedding certificate, changing their ages from 19 (him) and 18 (her) to 21. She is already pregnant with their first son, George John Pitt (who dies as a child).
The familt have been "Brush Makers" for generations and George does a little of that himself before changing jobs. His nephew George is also a Brush Maker and so sorting through their various records was fun (!) but at least there was the age difference to tell them apart. There were another 2 George Pitt's born around the 1878/1880 era who i've had to double check on to make sure i've not got anything wrong.
On the 1901 census they are listed at 34 Lansdowne Plane, Kent Road, Southwark and it says he works as a Bank Porter at Pickford's Wharf. By 1903 (through to at least 1906) they're living at 49 Elim Street, Bermondsey.
In the 1911 census they've moved to 7 Princes Place, Bermondsey and his job is a "porter".
By 1918 they've moved to 1 Nebraska St, Dover St.
Following Amy's death in 1924, George eventually re-marries in 1928 to Francis Charlotte West and
they live in 265 West St, Old Kent Road until his death in 1940.
And somewhere in all that he signed up for the 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment in 1899 and served in South Africa!
