I would appreciate thoughts on what the surname of Elizabeth is (line 9)

I have a theory but would like to see what others think first.

Thanks

That was my immediate reaction but the 'l in Bolton is different in the 'l' in Elizabeth & also the l'l in Gosnall below.

I would love this to be Bolton as it takes a 4xggm to her parents, just not convinced (yet).

I don't think a definitive answer is possible, Edward.

One wants to say that his l is looped and his t isn't - which is true right up to the point where Gosnall comes along.

If it were Bolton, would the writer be careful to loop the l to avoid confusion?

All I can give is my instinct (formed at first look and not changed since) that it's tt.

Have you found other entries for the same couple?

ADDED:

My statement about the looped l isn't quite true - the second Elizabeth on your record isn't clearly looped either.

I have now found 3 further baptisms for John & Elizabeth Bolton but, at this time I do not have copies. I'lll need to dive into the Essex RO site later.

btw, my initial reaction was botton as well

I would go with Botton too; that was my first impression. The cross is too far left to be over an 'l' for me, comparing with the 't's in 'daughter' & 'Elizabeth'.

Sorry, it seems too clearly "Bolton" to me, Doubling letters often results in changes in style.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
