Aha, a RC church would make sense. Was St Margaret RC? On RTL's link, I can see four RC churches in Sunderland - maybe one of those?

Info provided by Wolfie suggests possible Anglican marriage.  You wouldn't get that info on RC marriage register. (Profession etc)

St Margaret is on the Parish records (Anglican)

Was the couple Catholic?  If so the RC link might be worth checking for nearest Church on that website...

Looks like four possible RC Churches in Sunderland.  Possibly, someone might know the closest one to the couple's address?

Hi RTL  :) I hope you don’t mind me popping in to say that Wolfie said the information was from the marriage certificate, which would be in the standard form, regardless of denomination, and would include occupations etc.

According to a family tree on Anc :

11 Oct 1881 Castletown, North Hylton, Durham, England

Henry Smith, 49, Batchelor Labourer, Philip Smith deceased father, also Labourer. To Matilda Jackson, 23 Spinster, father Henry Jackson, Iron Puddler.(M.Certificate)

Hello both, yes, there is RC is the family. Matilda herself was bp RC (in Staffs) and at least two of her children were bp RC (in Washington).

You could try messaging the tree owner on Ancestry, hopefully they won’t mind telling you the name of the Church, they have already put the rest of the info on there  ;D

It's certainly one from the registrar's book, wherever it took place, and not C of E.
Local reference for the marriage is M62/119
https://www.sunderland.gov.uk/article/12356/Copies-of-birth-death-and-marriage-certificates

GRO index is vol 10a page 900

M62 marriages in that quarter run from John Docherty and Margaret Drum (M62/113) and which is on page 897 in the GRO index
all the way to William Airth and Mary Robertson (M62/200), which is on page 940 in the GRO index.
