HYMAS families in London 1720- 1820
« on: Friday 01 March 19 19:33 GMT (UK) »
As part of my HYMAS research with families originating from Essex( other posts on the Essex forum) I am looking at what is clearly very few HYMAS families in London. I am specifically , but not only looking for the occurrence of Samuel’s born/baptised who would probably have been born circa 1760-1780
I am aware of the family of Edward HYMAS a Draper who is recorded marrying Elizabeth BENROSE i24-2-1783, their family including a Samuel in 1796, and Edward John b 1786 who married an Alice GORDON  and had a number of children bapt in Shoreditch And is detailed as a hatter.
The only other HYMAS I have come across is a Richard HYMAS b circa 1792 with wife Ann is detailed as a Sail maker in the 1841 census.
If you have any HYMAS family or record from London/ Middlesex/Surrey from this era to expand this information I would be very interested.
I am aware of 2 Samuel HYMAS marriages in this area  Spitalfield 28-7-1789 to Elizabeth RANN, and possibly the same Samuel in 1800 to an Elizabeth in Whitechapel I think.
There are baptisms of two children at St Luke Finsbury in 1795, William aged 3 and Samuel in 1795. Mother is Elizabeth, that possible are the couple married 1789.

Wow, that’s fantastic information, thank you.
I will post the marriages identified to date total of 15 , there is that few!
Bapts not far in front  at 19.

Just need to relate all these burials to Bapts and marriages, that I know doesn’t quite work out that simple with these types of records that are probably a snap shot, but never the less. I see some interesting names tieing up with poor law records to fill in the gaps of this human survival story in the 19th century.

I guess non conformist records will be a gold mine, as these are not generally available on the main sites as searchable, I may be wrong!

Hello me again
Let's go through a few extra things for Samuel and Catherine's children 1721 onwards
Samuel  born c 1727 if he was buried 1769 age 42 must have married Martha before 1762
Wife Martha buried Bunhill fields age 62 21.6.1807 of Hoxton.

John born 1723-1750 wife seems to be Sarah Cash (marriage on Boyds 9.3.1752 London st Boltoph without Bishopsgate) -children Thomas 21.9.1757 St  Math Bethnal Green (Himus) weaver, William 27.8.1763 of Haggerston at ST L Shoresditch,Sarah 24.10.1766 St John Hackney,Joseph 29.11.1769 Bridewell chapel

Elizabeth married Thomas Ireland  gardener at Greenwich 12.2.1758 Kent  marriage licences. She was of Old st London .I've seen index only.

Mary and John Gilgrest -John 31.3.1751 ST Martins ,   Elizabeth 1.4.1755 St Martin's in the fields,George 14.5.1758,and Benjamin 30.7/3.8.1760.
So the latter one can't be related if I have the right family.

Mary Ann Lawrenson burial St Botoplh Aldsgate 22 .4.1772 unfortunately no age

HYMAS families in London 1720- 1820

Cider drinker has really opened up a few avenues of research. Here is a summary to date.
The subject title by some fluke appears to be quite accurate for one HYMAS family that migrated into London probably 1710-1714, possibly a little early from Leyton Essex. This was genuinely a surprise, it is confirmed from the two marriages of Samuel to Catherine HEWSON 4th Dec 1722 and it looks like his brother Edward to Catherine BIGMORE 8th Aug 1721 both in St Benett, Paul Wharf in part  of Queenhithe in The City of London.
All 4 were from Essex as detailed on the marriage entries and both brothers Bapts can be found in Leyton, along with another 5 siblings, all of Edward and Rose HYMAS , who in several records is identified as taylor  ( tailor) these Bapts from 1689 to 1702, in theory making the earliest migration 1702.
London Roll website currently has at at least 6 records relating to apprenticeships involving this family, even Edward to his father Robert.
Samuel b 1696 son of Edward is believed to be the Samuel who died circa 1772 with the will that summarises a family of possibly 8 children 1722-1750, and these associated marriages and Bapts of their children as detailed in the will are gradually coming to light . Still a long way to go to follow all the family through to the 1800’s. The Bapts of the children not yet identified in that period 1722 - 1750, hopefully they have serviced, but not on a current database.
I think it’s unlikely that this family is the only HYMAS/HIMAS/HINDMARSH or any approx spelling family in Lobdon in this period, but I suspect they form the majority of the people with that name.
