Sorry just realised she didn't marry Herbert Bellamy until 1941.

The 1939 Register index can be confusing. If shown as Bellamy (Hill), Hill is the name in 1939 and Bellamy is the future surname.

I made an error in my previous post. I should have said he was in Lincolnshire, not Lincoln. The Register only gives the District as North Kesteven. However, on further research, the street names are all in Navenby.

If you enter his location as Navenby when searching, it will find him without any alternatives and includes a map of the village on the transcription page.

Herbert Hill born 07/06/1921 died 08/05/1972
he was married to (at least I think hey were married) Ethel Vivienne Hill born 27/11/1904 died 27/11/1977

Hi Jo,

Have you reason to think Herbert and Ethel were not married? I've not so far spotted a marriage.

Am I barking up the wrong tree thinking that Ethel is not your husband's grandmother but a later relationship for Herbert?

I can see on freebmd a Herbert Hill marrying in North Kestevan district Dec quarter 1943. This is same district as his mother's marriage to Mr Bellamy.

Have you had sight of the birth certificate of your in-law or identified the birth on freebmd? I think that the mother's maiden name would help you.

Sorry if that's more questions than answers!

Regards, Tony.

I though perhaps they were not married as I couldn't find a marriage anywhere on line. I will look at the one you refer to. We have no birth certificates or any paperwork. Both the grand parents died when my husband was very young so details are quite sketchy.
I am still quite new to this - I will look on freeband. Thank you very much for your help. Jo.
