Clydebank: need help understanding marriage certificate
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 15:11 GMT (UK) »
I can't make out the information under the mother's names on the marriage certificate that I have attached. What is below Susan Scott and what is below previously Moore? Thank you.

Under Susan Scott is M L Lockerty & under Previously Moore R R Guinness

Surely in both cases it's M.S. for Maiden Surname?

I think the maiden surnames might actually be Docherty and McGuinness.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks for the input everyone. I believe that the bride, Isabella Moore, was born in Donegal, Ireland. However, there is no birth in all of Ireland of an Isabella Moore to a James Moore and an Emily [nee McGuinness] Moore. I don't know much about conducting research in Scotland. How might I search in the Scottish records for the birth of Isabella [nee Moore] Scott's birth information? Thank you.

Agreed - Susan Scott, maiden surname Docherty; Emily Stafford, previously Moore, maiden Surname McGuinness

I suggest you start with the 1901 and 1911 censuses of Ireland, which are available free of charge at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ - go for Emily as her name is the least common. If you can't find her in either of those, the Scottish censuses are available at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

If you can find Emily's marriage to a Mr Stafford, that might give you some clues about her origins.
