Help with an Essex or Suffolk marriage
« on: Saturday 02 March 19 16:16 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a marriage between John Bolton & Elizabeth Unknown which based on the first baptism I have found would be 1770-1775.

The first baptism is in Manningtree in 1775.

Elizabeth died in 1832 with a declared age of 84 giving a birth c1746, I have not found a burial for JB.

There are no matching records in Boyd's Marriage Index for either County and the only possible record is on Family Search in Feb 1772 at Kersey between JB & Elizabeth Jessup which is 10 miles NW of Manningtree.

A EJ was baptised in Hadleigh in Nov 1745, parents names are not used for her 4 children.

My knowledge on resources for these counties is limited and I would appreciate any thoughts as to whether this is good candidate and if there are any other areas I should explore.

many thanks

Edward

The Essex Marriage Index 1754-1851, originally compiled by Jack Baxter is now run by Rita Harris - £1 for an initial enquiry, 50p for each extra one made at the same time - bargain :D Discounts given for blanket searches on a surname too.

The Suffolk Family History Society has compiled a marriage index, complete for 1754-1837, 1650-1753 still in progress - it is available on CDs, but at least some of it (possibly all of it) is also on findmypast - current parish coverage here:

I have now heard back from Rita Kennedy who cannot find a suitable marriage in Essex, so it looks like the Kersey one is correct.

I have found that around this time 1770-1790 and before, a lot of my Essex lot originated in Suffolk and moved to North Essex or South East Essex. I only went to the RO in Lowestoft a few weeks ago as I could have looked at the Kersey one for you, get the ever vital names of the witnesses. If I go again in the next month I can have a look for you, unless someone else may be visiting in the meantime and may offer a lookup.

Hadleigh is just down the road from Kersey (well the next parish along to be honest) so the 1745 baptism of Elizabeth Jessup seems promising. May be a good idea to trace any siblings to see if anyone else with the surname Bolton or Jessup wed in the Manningtree area.

Seems the south mid Suffolk area did have lots of migration to Essex, speaking from experience with my ancestors.

Elizabeth buried 30 May 1830 ;D

Is there any known later Bolton connection to Chelsworth?
