Hi folks,

I'm now looking into the life of Simon Wilkins.

Born approx 1802, probably St Agnes Cornwall or close.
Married Mary Wills/Wells St Agnes Cornwall 1825.
Several children born up to 1840. Same location.

Then disappears.

Can we screen the records of transportation, migration and what-have-you to see if he
ended up in Australia? Since there is no sign of him in the 1841 UK census, I'm inclined
suspect transportation happened in 1840, if it happened at all.

Appreciate any help.

-David C

Hello
I have just looked at the convict records site and have not found any Simon Wilkins listed at all in their transportation lists  for Australia; nor on findmypast under migration or criminal lists.
It is possible that his name was misspelt.
 Good luck with your hunt

Thanks Jackie.

It was an attempt to rule out a possibility as much as it was an attempt to expose a possibility.

I'll dig deeper into the UK data and see where else he might be hiding.

Cheers

Does this birth certificate give any information on Mary's 'condition' as to marriage

WILKIN, THOMAS       mmn WELLS
GRO Reference: 1840  S Quarter in TRURO UNION  Volume 09  Page 266

Did Mary remarry if not what did the 1851 say about her marital status

Hello Rosie.

I wasn't expecting to see any more posts on this topic. But welcome aboard.

I have seen a death record for Simon Wilkin in Tavistock 1847 that gives birth in 1802.
That matches a baptism record for a man by that name, in St Agnes, Cornwall.
Fam..search provides a scan of the baptism record which provides a birth date of Nov 30 1802.
It also identifies parents as Simon and Elizabeth.

Ruling out the possibility of transportation, I am prepared to take this match as correct until I find evidence otherwise.

(There is another Simon Wilkin 1806-1840, Staffordshire I think).

Simon Wilkins ( the 's' seems to come and go) married Mary Wills/Wells Dec 27 1825, St Agnes,
and a number of children of that surname appear in St Agnes soon afterwards.

His wife Mary was born in 1806, St Agnes.
She appears in 1841 with her children, St Agnes.
The best fit for her death is 1850, St Agnes.
She does not appear in later censuses.

The evidence for these people is all circumstantial but ties together coherently.

I'm not sure what other questions I could ask about them.

The story sounds a bit tragic as the children were left to fend for themselves
after 1850. It could be that they were supported by uncles and aunts as there seem to be
a few of these in St Agnes/Truro at that time.

The only burial I can see in St Agnes for a Mary Wilkin/s in 1850 gives an age at death of 75, is there another

Could she have remarried

Yes, I was wondering what her age at death would turn out to be.
Unfortunately the numbers no longer match and we have a Mary Wilkins born 1806 who is MIA.

Just wondering if we should continue the discussion about her here or should I open a new topic on the Cornwall board?
